The Story Behind Our Handmade Spanish Ceramics

For nearly 40 years, Selbrae House has been known for creating handcrafted slate, oak and leather homeware from our workshop in Fife, Scotland. As our collections have evolved, one thing has always remained the same: a commitment to genuine craftsmanship and beautifully made products.
In spring 2025, our product development team set off on a journey in search of something special. What they found was a family-run ceramics workshop tucked away in a quiet Spanish village - one where three generations of artisans continue the traditional techniques of hand throwing, hand painting and carefully finishing every piece by hand.
That visit became the beginning of our ceramic collection.
A Family of Ceramic Makers
The moment we stepped inside the workshop, it felt familiar.
Not because the products looked like ours - but because the values did.
Just as every slate board is engraved and every oak piece is carefully finished in our Fife workshop, every ceramic piece in Spain is shaped, painted and glazed by skilled hands that have perfected their craft over decades.
Three generations work together every day, preserving techniques that simply can't be replicated by mass production. Every mug, bowl and serving plate carries the subtle character that only true handmade ceramics possess.
Inspired by the Mediterranean
Our team spent several days reviewing samples, exploring the workshop and getting to know the family behind every piece.
Away from the pottery studio, we wandered the sun-soaked streets of the village, surrounded by whitewashed buildings, blue skies and the relaxed pace of Mediterranean life.
Those colours, textures and slower moments became just as inspiring as the ceramics themselves.
Many of the designs you'll now find throughout our collections - from soft green Flora stripes to our rich cobalt Coastal range - were born from this trip and reimagined through the Selbrae House lens.
Every Piece is Truly Handmade
Unlike factory-made ceramics, no two pieces in our collection are ever exactly alike.
Each item is:
- Hand thrown on the pottery wheel
- Individually hand painted
- Carefully glazed and fired
- Finished by hand before making its journey to Scotland
