How to Care for Your Wooden Boards & Keep Them Looking Beautiful

As the seasons begin to change, we’re delighted to share our lovely new collection of oak board designs with you. Each piece is handcrafted from Scottish oak and engraved with care, making them not only practical for everyday use but also a timeless addition to your home.

One question we’re often asked is how to care for wooden boards so they stay looking as beautiful as the day you first unwrap them. And with the arrival of our new designs, we thought this was the perfect time to revisit that very question. With just a little care, your boards will last for years, developing a character and patina that makes them even more special over time.

In this post, we’ll walk you through a simple step-by-step guide to caring for your wooden boards, so you can enjoy them for seasons to come.

Everyday Care for Wooden Boards

Looking after your oak boards day to day is simple, and a little regular care goes a long way. After each use, just wipe them down with a damp cloth or gently hand-wash with mild soap and warm water. This will keep the wood clean without stripping away its natural oils.

One thing to always avoid is the dishwasher. The high heat and harsh detergents can cause oak to crack, warp, or lose its beautiful finish - so hand-washing is always the safest choice.

When you’re not using your board, make sure to store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or strong heat sources. This helps protect the wood’s natural integrity and prevents fading or warping.

How to Bring Your Wooden Boards Back to Life

Even with regular care, over time your oak boards can start to look a little tired - and that’s completely normal. To keep the wood looking its best, we recommend periodically applying a food-safe wax-oil or beeswax finish. This nourishes the wood, preserves its natural appearance, and helps maintain its durability for years to come.

You Will Need:

  • Fine sandpaper or scourer – for tackling tough stains or marks.
  • Mild soap and water – for gentle cleaning before treatment.
  • A clean, dry cloth or sponge – for applying the oil-wax evenly along the wood grain.
  • A food-safe wax-oil or beeswax – for nourishing and protecting the oak. You can purchase our own Selbrae House 50ml Oil-Wax.
  • A well-ventilated space – for drying and curing the board after treatment.

Here’s how to revive your wooden boards and bring them back to their best:

Step 1: Spot Clean Tough Stains

Start by gently tackling any stubborn marks or stains using fine sandpaper or a scourer. Once the stains have been removed, wipe the board clean with mild soap and water, then allow it to dry completely.

Step 1: Spot clean tough stains

Step 2: Apply the Oil-Wax

When the board is dry, shake your oil-wax well. Using a clean, dry cloth or sponge, apply a thin layer along the grain of the wood. Be sure to cover the entire surface evenly - a little goes a long way.

Step 2: Apply oil-wax

Step 3: Allow to Dry and Cure

Spread the oil-wax evenly, then place the board in a well-ventilated area to dry. For best results, allow the finish to fully cure before heavy use - approximately 8–10 hours. And that’s it! You’re ready to use your lovely wooden board again.

Step 3: Allow to dry and cure
